CBD Oil for ADHD and ADD

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are brain-based syndromes that involve particular brain functions and related behaviors. ADHD includes some degree of hyperactivity/impulsivity as a symptom.

According to the Attention Deficit Disorder Association:

“These brain operations are collectively referred to as “executive functioning skills” and include important functions such as attention, concentration, memory, motivation and effort, learning from mistakes, impulsivity, hyperactivity, organization, and social skills.  There are various contributing factors that play a role in these challenges including chemical and structural differences in the brain as well as genetics.”

Who Does ADHD or ADD Affect?

In the U.S. alone, 11,000,000 people have ADHD. Researchers no longer believe the condition is more prevalent in men and that women are just as affected by it.

ADHD/ADD is not limited to children. Because it is a neuro-behavioral condition, about two-thirds of children continue to require treatment into adulthood.

ADHD interferes with or reduces the quality of life for those who struggle with it in the areas of social, school, and work functioning.

Symptoms of ADHD usually show up before the person reaches the age of six and may continue into adulthood. Symptoms associated with ADHD may be classified into two different types of behavioral disorders–attention deficit and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

Symptoms of ADD:

  • Short attention span
  • Inability to carry out long tasks
  • Difficulty paying attention to instructions
  • Loss of memory or forgetfulness

Symptoms of Impulsivity and Hyperactivity:

  • Excessive talking
  • Having no fear or sense of danger
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Constant restlessness.

Hemp Flower for Adults with ADHD and ADD

Stardust Hemp at The Hemp Haus[/caption]

For some adults, vaping or smoking raw hemp flower with high CBD or high CBG may be a great way to reduce ADHD symptoms. We recommend Stardust Hemp because it is a high-quality hemp flower that contains a wide range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. When all these phytonutrients are consumed together, therapeutic benefits are often compounded because of the synergistic effects of whole plant compounds. Experts call this the entourage effect.

Check out the Stardust Hemp site for more about their CBD hemp strains and where and how it is sourced their flower is sourced. You’ll see why we recommend it!

Research on CBD Oil and Cannabis Effects on ADHD

It should be noted that there are quite a number of medications and behavioral therapies for ADHD patients. However, research has shown that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) can play a vital role in its treatment. A study using mice found that those presenting the symptoms of impulsivity were deficient in CB1 receptors. This implies that an increase in the consumption of cannabinoids is associated with a fall in the intensity of the impulsivity of ADHD patients.

A study conducted in 2017 by King’s College in London aimed to test the efficacy of cannabinoids in the treatment of ADHD in adults. Participants were randomly assigned into two groups—one group receiving a cannabinoid treatment and the other group receiving a placebo treatment. Researchers monitored the activity, cognitive performance, and behavioral levels of participants with ADHD, along with their emotional maturity and responsibility.

Results of the study showed that there were significant levels of hyperactivity in the active group, plus lack of attention and emotional responsibility. It was discovered that treatment with cannabinoids did not cause any negative effects or impacts on cognitive performance. This was a surprise to many people because cannabis has always been associated with a fall in cognitive performance.

Conversely, researchers were of the opinion that the improvements in impulsivity arose from the anxiety-reducing effects of THC and CBD.

Most recently, researchers found that the consumption of cannabis with a rich phytochemical (cannabinoids and terpenes) profile by patients with ADHD was associated with a decrease in their traditional medications. The study was published in the Israeli medical journal Rambam Maimonides in January 2020.

The study was questionnaire-based and consisted of 59 adult patients licensed for medical cannabis treatment in Israel. While all patients had been diagnosed with ADHD by a physician, the study also scored self-reported symptoms, categorizing them as either low or high. These scores were evaluated alongside monthly consumption rates — a low dose and a high dose group.

According to the study’s data, both the low dose group and patients reporting lower levels of ADHD symptoms had a higher rate of stopping all ADHD medications after using cannabis.

Additionally, the study found a correlation between low-symptom patients and reduced anxiety. The research also suggests an association between patients with lower ADHD scores and a higher rate of cannabinol (CBN) consumption, a cannabinoid byproduct of THC oxidation, but not THC.

ADHD may be accompanied by a number of psychological symptoms like sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, and more. Considering the research so far (we all agree more is needed) and what we’ve seen with our own eyes, cannabinoids could potentially treat adults and children with ADD and ADHD. And with little-to-no side effects, which you may already know is not the case with the usual ADHD/ADD meds.
